Oral Surgery
Some people have part of their palate missing because of a defect they were born with or perhaps because of surgery for mouth cancer or trauma.
This gap can interfere with speaking, swallowing, chewing etc but can be filled with a prosthesis called an obturator, which just means something that blocks a hole.
These are usually held in place by the remaining teeth, implanted supports or as an extension to a denture.
A dental implant is an artificial substitute/replacement for the root portion of your natural tooth and is anchored into a pre-drilled socket in your jaw-bone to support a crown, bridge or secure a denture firmly in place.
Implants are made from titanium, a material that is well tolerated by bone and integrates easily with bone tissue. During the placement of a dental implant, the goal is to achieve a close contact between the outer surface of the implant and the surrounding bone tissue so they can “fuse” together (osseointegration), creating a stable support for the new teeth.
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by a reduction or cessation of breathing during sleep.
A common treatment for sleep apnea is Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT). The oral appliance is a custom made mouthpiece that shifts the lower jaw forward which opens up the airway. OAT is usually successful in patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
What is a prosthesis?
A prosthesis is an artificial substitute for a missing part of your body.
Medical prostheses artificially restore patients who have facial or body defects due to malignancy, congenital deformity, or trauma. They offer hope to patients who cannot be surgically reconstructed and are used as a temporary measure for patients who are awaiting surgical reconstruction.
In order for the prosthesis to appear life like, every texture, form and pigmentation must be carefully matched. This requires several clinic visits as well as extensive laboratory work.

What care will my prosthesis need?
The type of care needed will depend on the materials used and the type of prosthetic.
Once we have fitted your new prosthesis we will supply you with all the information you need to care for it. We will also arrange for a follow-up appointment, to ensure that there are no problems with your prosthesis and that you are completely happy.
